2026 Summer Internship Program

Lowcountry Area Health Education Center (LCAHEC) supports high school and college students—especially from rural and underserved communities—on their paths to becoming healthcare professionals and building an effective future healthcare workforce.

LCAHEC offers summer enrichment programs to expose students to the many opportunities available in healthcare. The application for the Summer Internship Program is now available! Internship Program Details

The Summer Internship Program is an experience offered to graduating high school seniors and college students interested in a health professions career. Priority consideration will be given to applicants who reside in or attend school within a rural area.

• Once accepted, students are placed at a healthcare facility in the Lowcountry.
• Participating counties include: Colleton, Orangeburg, Allendale, and Hampton.
• Interns may observe a healthcare provider over the course of up to four (4) weeks.
• Interns will present a PowerPoint about their experience.
• Program dates: June 23rd, 2026 – August 1st, 2026 (approx.)
• Students must attend any mandatory virtual meetings and may be required to attend meetings in Walterboro, SC.
• Some healthcare facilities may require interns to cover costs such as medical exams, background checks, etc.
• Upon completion, students will receive a $500 stipend if all requirements are fulfilled.

Eligibility

Applicants are required to:

• Be in good academic standing.
• Demonstrate a sincere interest in a specified healthcare field.
• Understand all internship sites will be located in: Colleton, Orangeburg, Allendale, and Hampton Counties.
• Understand the application process is competitive and submission does not guarantee acceptance.
• Understand you may incur additional fees required by a healthcare facility if accepted.
• Be a graduating high school senior or undergraduate student.
• Provide transportation to/from the internship placement site and possibly the AHEC office in Walterboro, SC for meetings.

Directions

• Applications must be typed or printed in blue or black ink.
• All sections of the application must be completed. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.
• Applications must include an official copy of transcripts supplied by the registrar.
• Include two (2) recommendation forms:
  • One from a mentor/counselor/clergyman
  • One from an adult familiar with your academic work and character
  • Recommendations are not accepted from family members
  • Each recommendation must be enclosed in a sealed envelope by the recommender
